Floyd Mayweather Jump Rope Routine July 21, 2011

by David Jenyns

Watch Floyd Mayweather begin his 6 week training camp to prepare for his bout verses Victor Ortiz. Not only does Pretty Boy Floyd have speed and grace with his feet firmly planted in the ring, but as you will see… with his feet in the air as his jump rope passes beneath him so fast it will make your eyes strain. If you think that alone is impressive, wait until you see what else he adds to his jump rope routine. Enjoy.
Video Rating: 4 / 5

This is a nice little routine that could work for fighters looking for strength without losing speed. It is a longer routine, so might be boring to watch all the way through, I’ll try to keep them short for those of us who can’t sit still long enough! Ganbate!

I’ve worked out goin on 5? years now and I can honestly say throwin weights down doesn’t make you a prick it just means you can keep a steady pace. They can pick up what he’s layin down because if he didn’t train as hard as he does none of them would be gettin fat checks to feed their family.

many of these comments sound ignorant. his job is to train and win? fights. their job is to support him. everyone is simply doing their part in this workout.

It’s his “non stop” routine? Pretty sure he was capable of handing his team mate the weights when he was done plenty of? times, but decides to drop it. Personally, he looks like a prick. To kids who workout on their own time , you don’t need your mom to hand the weights to you, don’t worry about taking a second out of your “nonstop” routine to pick up your own weights.

All I was saying is that you should build up from the legs up,not? the arms down and that if your not lifting explosively and correctly when weight training for Striking of any kind you can actually build up neural path ways that can be counter productive to good explosive striking. Also beginner or not bad form is bad form! If a beginner lifts weight improperly they can get hurt. Also by putting legs first in this routine he would have done more reps and gain more endurance!

Reply

NewYorkKAB June 7, 2012 at 6:55 am

I don’t think you get it. Weight Classes are very important. You can get stronger and more explosive without gaining muscle mass if you train right.EXPLOSIVE POWER translates to harder hits when done correctly and in combination with practicing technique when striking and sparring. He needs Power Endurance not aerobic endurance! When he does mitts and heavy bag work he will get good conditioning for striking/MMA.In his description he says you can train this way and not lose speed but? that is false!

Reply

lamasu June 7, 2012 at 7:39 am

boxers lift light with long reps because its about endurance not power. you dont build the same endurance and muscle structure thats suitable for punching with heavy weight and explosions. sure these exercises can be modified for heavy weight and explosion but hes not lifting for a weight lifting tournament hes lifting for fighting. your weight class comment makes no sense and doesn’t translate to the goals of the completely different sports of boxing/mma.? also this is directed towards beginners

There are 2 things I don’t like about this video.
#1 he does his lower body last which is stupid because you are short changing your legs which are the power? houses of all movements!
#2 he doesn’t even do the “explosives lifts properly or EXPLOSIVELY!

How is this supposed to develop speed/power when he is not doing the movements with speed/power?
Also Olympic Lifters are in weight classes and they STILL lift big weight! Its diet and rep scheme that make you lose/gain weight!

I believe in heavy weights like Bruce Lee, but as Bruce made know ur weight must be controlled through diet and he also believe in stretching to maintain flexibility, I usually do plyometrics and then finish the muscles off with some heavy compound lifts,? I dont do barbell bench presses however, I do dumbell press keepiing the elbow tight to the body, but most training is boxing training, heavy bag, jump rope, agility bag etc.

niceshotquanz June 7, 2012 at 9:24 am

hes a boxer and probably wants to keep his explosiveness, and he doesnt use heavy weights because? he doesnt want to get much bigger, just stronger at around the same size

The problem with high loads is? that your muscle memory for fast recoiling like ” body hook, head hook ” with one hand slows down, you gotta balance your heavy weights and low reps with your light weights and high reps, those two types of work outs work muscle memory differently.

Reply

RustyFucket June 7, 2012 at 12:40 pm

But this is NOT a strength routine. To get the most out of strength training you have to do high load, but low reps. 6 or less reps a set, 3-6 sets, with 2.5-5 min rest (depending on the exercise). The snatch is good for using strength training and applying it to explosive power. Which is great for? many sports like combat sports

Haha. Mother of? Jabba the Hutt. You have got too much time on your hands. Lol. Hang split snatch it is then.

Reply

billysue2 June 7, 2012 at 2:25 pm

mother of christ, its a hang split snatch. You havent a clue. And it isnt a great routine for what it claims, strength without losing speed. In fact you wont gain any strength from it unless your an anorexic? girl. Its a bar complex, popularised by istvan jarovek, former olympic weightlifting coach to bulgaria. Its purpose is metabolic conditioning without doing traditioinal cardio and also a good fat burning workout while preserving but not gaining lean mass.

Reply

billysue2 June 7, 2012 at 3:00 pm

yep if you want to more glute activation and your sport requires that range of motion.A boxer? wont but a wrestler will. The squat only to parallel was disproven decades ago.As a matter of fact the knee ligaments, particularly ACL are slackest at 90degrees and so the knee is more unstable than the full squat.

Reply

mankillsquare June 7, 2012 at 3:17 pm

I think you’ll find it was a variant on the? snatch.

Reply

NewWorldDestroyer June 7, 2012 at 4:06 pm

No you shouldn’t……..never drop? your hips lower than your knees.

Hey, you should adjust your last? exercise, it was not properley executed. First bring bar to chest level (clean), then you push it up in the manner you did (jerk). Otherwise great routine.
